South Dakota Summer Food Service

South Dakota > South Dakota Summer Food Service

Program Description:

The goal of the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is to conduct a nonprofit food service program for children during the summer months. The primary purpose of the program is to provide food service during periods when schools are closed for vacation. Children under the age of 18 can receive a meal free of charge at a participating site.

In 2000, more than 4,602 low income children received meals during school vacation periods through the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). All SFSP meals are served free, with the Federal government reimbursing local sponsoring organizations for meals served. SD local agencies received approximately $738,839 which went to local agencies for program operation and administration. In FY 2000, 49 agencies operated SFSP at 84 sites.
