Program Description:
The Minnesota Food Assistance Program (MFAP) is a county-administered, Federal program that assists people and families with low incomes to purchase food and better meet their nutritional needs. The program is not intended to supply all of a person or family's food needs. Instead, it is a supplement to help them achieve or maintain their independence.
General Program Requirements:
In order to qualify for this benefit program, you must be a resident of the state of Minnesota and fall into one of two groups: (1) those with a current bank balance (savings and checking combined) under $2,001, or (2) those with a current bank balance (savings and checking combined) under $3,001 who share their household with a person or persons age 60 and over, or with a person with a disability (a child, your spouse, a parent, or yourself). For either group, you must also have an annual household income of less than $14,079 if one person lives in the household; $18,941 if two people live in the household; $23,803 if three people live in the household; $28,665 if four people live in the household; $33,527 if five people live in the household; $38,389 if six people live in the household; $43,251 if seven people live in the household; or $48,113 if eight people live in the household. For larger households, add $4,862 for each additional person in the home.

To apply for Food Support, contact your county human services agency.
You can find your county government's web site on the State's NorthStar web site.
You may also call the Food Support hotline at 1-651-431-4050 in the Twin Cities metro area or 1-800-657-3698 outside the metro area. For TTY service, call the Minnesota Relay at 711 or 1-800-627-3529. Next, complete a Combined Application Form (CAF) and have an interview. The CAF is the application counties require you to complete to apply for food and cash assistance. When your benefits begin depends on the date the county receives the first page of the CAF. You can get a CAF from your local county office or from the DHS website. If you are not able to go to your county office for an interview due to hardship, you may request a phone interview.
